NIOSH research shows that washing hands with soap and water is not completely effective in removing lead (and other toxic metals) from the surface of the skin [NIOSH 1992b; NIOSH 1996; NIOSH 1999].  To remove lead from skin, NIOSH researches recently developed a novel and highly effective skin decontamination/cleansing method [Esswein and Boeniger 2005].
